Are software engineers lucky?

Genuine question: In what other fields of employment does a person take it on themselves to learn, grow and develop their skills, on their own time? Furthermore, this is done not only without resentment but is openly embraced. Books (some quite expensive!) are purchased and read, GitHub profiles are maintained, side projects exploring new technologies are started.

I hope I speak for most when I say we love it. If we, as software engineers, didn't, then we're in the wrong job.

We're incredibly lucky to be able to draw a salary for doing something we'd probably be doing anyway.
